Meeting with Aneko Takahashi had become an unexpected pleasure for Yoshi. She always felt that the other woman added an unexpected mixture of sweetness to her day. Even in her grief and anxiety, Aneko was charming, alluring and thoroughly engaging, qualities that Yoshi felt got short shrift in today’s almost-pathologically detached, techno-obsessed world. She found herself wanting to spend more time with Aneko than was reasonable, especially when this was a client relationship.

“Should we go, then?”

Aneko’s soft-spoken query tore Yoshi from her navel gazing. She spent a lot of time philosophizing around Aneko and, in her presence, was not quite as composed or as orderly as she usually was. She wanted to let her guard down around Aneko. They’d known each other mere weeks and yet Yoshi often found herself daydreaming about the woman. Of course, if Blind Eye did not find her sister, they probably wouldn’t ever be able to develop a relationship outside this case. Not that she wanted to. Well, maybe…

“Hello? Yoshi? Where’d you go?”

Damn, she was doing it again. Fantasizing. By now, Aneko must think her a total loon. Or some kind of blind narcoleptic. “Oh yes, of course. Just thinking. I’m heading toward BART myself, so I’ll walk with you.”

They ambled rather slowly in the direction of the city’s underground subway system. After a few minutes Aneko took Yoshi’s elbow. She would have found the move patronizing had it come from a different client but, from Aneko, it was a gesture of kindness. Plus, Yoshi couldn’t help but feel a sense of electricity between them. She almost willed Aneko to move her hand, to caress her palm and entwine with her fingers. She longed to hold Aneko’s hand.

“Aneko, I’ve been thinking—” Before Yoshi could finish, a cacophony caught her attention. The shriek of tires on warm asphalt sounded too close, and moments before a shot rang out Yoshi threw Aneko to the ground, all the while yelling “Get down!” for anyone in earshot.

Aneko was dead silent and for a split second Yoshi worried she’d been shot. But, as the barrage of bullets whirled past her, Aneko grabbed Yoshi’s arms and gathered her whole body close. It was for protection, no doubt, but even in her terror Yoshi recognized that the two women were closer than ever. Screams bounced off concrete, fleeting footsteps pounded the pavement, car horns gave way to emergency sirens, but still she and Aneko huddled together like old lovers, sinewy limbs enmeshed through fear, adrenaline, and perhaps, something even more primal.

“Are you okay? Were you hit?” Yoshi began to pull away. Separating felt like removing an insect from flypaper. It was wrong, she could feel it. There was a charge between them, no doubt, but Yoshi could tell the other woman was still trembling from the attempt on her life. Or on Yoshi’s life. Or some stranger walking nearby. Who knew exactly what that attack was about? But Yoshi’s instincts were usually reliable and she was certain Pioneer Institute was somehow at the helm.
